Kotoko and Hearts are The Last Double Winning Teams in Ghana : Aduana Football Club wanted the Double this season but they failed to make it happen as King Faisal Football Club edged them out in the quarter-final stage of the MTN FA Cup on Sunday in Abrankese.
The Ogya Boys still lead the Ghana Premier League standings on 44 points after 25 matches but the honor of the last sides to sweep the two major titles of the Ghana Football Association in a single season remains with the Asante Kotoko side of the 2013/14 season under head coach Mas-Ud Didi Dramani and the Samuel Boadu Hearts of Oak side of 2020/21 season.
That Kotoko team comprised of names such as the late Burkinabe goalkeeper Abdoulaye Soulama , Isaac Amoako (Goalkeepers coach at Nsoatreman FC currently) , Seidu Bancey , Amos Frimpong “Olomo” , Michael Akuffo “Gadafi” , Jordan Opoku “Akatapore” and the rest.
They won the 2023/14 league title with 55 points in 30 matches with the record ; 17 wins , 4 drawn games and 9 defeats. They scored 37 goals and conceded 35.
The Porcupine Warriors began their season with a 2-1 home win over Aduana FC on 15th September 2013 at the Sunyani Coronation Park as Kotoko served a home ban. Didi Dramani and his team followed it up with a Super Clash victory against Hearts of Oak in Accra during Week 2 on 22nd September 2013.
More wins in a row came for the eventual champions as they defeated New Edubiase United by 1-0 during Week 3 and overcame Inter Allies in their Week 4 away fixture. Sekondi Haasacas were also beaten by the Reds until Bechem United stopped Kotoko during Week 6 in Bechem with a 1-0 win on October 20th , 2013.
Nevertheless, Kotoko held on to clinch the league title at the end of the season on 4th June 2014 as they lost their Week 30 match at Aduana FC by 2-0. Heart of Lions were placed second on 47 points , Hearts of Oak came third on 46 points whilst Ashantigold completed the Top Four on 45 points.
Dramani and his team were in the FA Cup final against Inter Allies on 8th June 2014. Pacy winger Richard Mpong scored first for Kotoko in the 7th minute but in the 60th minute Talla Ndiaye equalized for Allies.
The final was pushed into extra time and that is where Seidu Bancey made the difference with his winner after goalkeeper Osei Kwame failed to deal with a Jordan Opoku shot. Bancey reacted quickest to slot home the winning goal as Kotoko won the double for the first ever time in their long history and they remain the last Ghanaian side to achieve this feat alongside the recent Phobia side.
