Leeds Ordered to Pay 28 Million Euros to their Former Player : World governing body of football FIFA has ordered Leeds United to pay 28 million euros to French striker Jean-Kevin Augustin (24 years old) for failing to recruit him in 2020 at the end of his loan deal with an obligation to buy.
This is a huge jackpot for Jean-Kevin Augustin.
The FIFA Dispute Resolution Chamber ordered Leeds to pay the French striker 28 million euros on Monday for wrongfully breaching his contract.
The former PSG player was loaned by Bundesliga side Leipzig to Leeds in January 2020 with an obligation to buy at the end of the season in the event of the English club’s promotion to the Premier League. Despite winning the Championship title and earning promotion to the Premier League , Leeds did not ultimately exercise the option which amounted to 20 million euros.
In their defence, the Yorkshire club had argued that they did not have to pay the transfer fee as Augustin’s loan expired (June 30) before their move into the top flight was made official on July 17th after the season was delayed by the Covid pandemic.
In 2021, FIFA ordered Leeds to pay the full amount and the club lost their appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) last November.
Leeds eventually paid 17.6 million euros in transfer fees to Leeds.
Following this decision, Augustin took his own case against Leeds to FIFA who ruled in his favour. The €28m package includes the player’s full five-year contract with a salary of around €90,000 per week. The club could again take the case to the CAS.
“The club cannot comment on an ongoing legal matter,” a Leeds United club spokesperson said.
