Afriyie Barnieh’s Poor Peformance against Congo : The Ghana U23 national men’s football team opened their 2023 CAF U23 Africa Cup of Nations tournament account with a 3-2 victory against Congo on Sunday evening.
The Black Meteors failed to sparkle in the fist half and Ghana boss Ibrahim Tanko needed to make changes to his starting formation at the start of the second period.
Captain of the team Daniel Afriyie Barnieh and Dreams FC winger Sylvester Simba were the first two players to go out as Tanko introduced Emmanuel Yeboah and Hafiz Ibrahim.
The former Hearts of Oak attacker now at FC Zurich was off colour for most parts of the first period and it is clear to see that lack of minutes at his Swiss club has had a toll on his performance.
Interestingly the team started to play their usual positive football after the changes were done with the Ghana team taking a 3-0 lead after 90 minutes.
Even though Congo threatened to stage a great comeback , the score line remained 3-2 to the advantage of the Ghanaian team.
Substitute Emmanuel Yeboah went ahead to provide an assist and scored two goals to help Ghana win the game and this does not represent good news for Barnieh as his starting place in the next game against host nation Morocco on June 27th cannot be guaranteed.
