Why Asante Kotoko will not receive any prize money for winning the Toyota Cup

Asante Kotoko secured a historic victory over South Africa’s Kaizer Chiefs in the final of the 2025 Toyota Cup, claiming the trophy after a dramatic penalty shootout that had fans on the edge of their seats.

The match, held on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban, ended 0-0 after 90 minutes of intense action. It was in the penalty shootout where the Porcupine Warriors emerged victorious, triumphing 3-2 to seal a memorable win.

The game itself was a tactical battle from the very beginning, with both teams showing deep respect for each other’s offensive strengths. Both sides struggled to break through the opposition’s well-organized defense, playing cautiously to avoid any costly mistakes.

Despite numerous attempts, neither Asante Kotoko nor Kaizer Chiefs managed to find the back of the net during regular time.

The tension was palpable as both teams exchanged successful penalty kicks, each one adding to the mounting pressure. It was a high-stakes contest, where every shot held the potential to decide the game.

The decisive moment came when Mohammed Camara, a standout performer throughout the match, delivered two critical saves, securing the victory for Asante Kotoko and clinching the 2025 Toyota Cup.

Asante Kotoko’s triumph in the tournament was a true testament to their resilience, discipline, and focus. Their path to the final had been anything but easy, yet they showcased remarkable character and determination throughout the competition.

The team’s defense was particularly solid, holding firm against the dangerous attacking force of Kaizer Chiefs. Goalkeeper Camara’s exceptional performances, including his heroics in the penalty shootout, earned him well-deserved accolades.

For Kaizer Chiefs, it was a bitter disappointment, especially considering their dominance in possession. Despite creating numerous chances, they were unable to convert, with missed penalties proving to be their undoing.

Ultimately, Asante Kotoko’s victory in the 2025 Toyota Cup will go down in history as a monumental achievement for both the club and Ghanaian football, as they join the ranks of an elite group of teams to have claimed this prestigious title.

Will Kotoko get prize money for winning Toyota Cup?

The Toyota Cup in South Africa is a pre-season friendly football tournament organized by Kaizer Chiefs in partnership with Toyota South Africa Motors. Per reports, unlike traditional competitive tournaments, the Toyota Cup does not offer cash prize money to the winning team.

Instead, the event focuses on fan engagement and entertainment. For instance, during the 2024 edition, a lucky fan had the chance to win a brand-new Toyota Corolla Cross XI CVT valued at over R400,000 through a prize draw. Participants entered the draw by purchasing a match ticket and sending an SMS with their details to a designated number.

Similarly, the 2025 edition featured a competition where fans could win a Toyota Starlet XS by participating in a half-time draw at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.

Therefore, while the Toyota Cup does not provide monetary rewards to the winning team, it offers significant value to fans through substantial vehicle giveaways and live entertainment.
