Asante Kotoko Seek New Coaching Direction : The Porcupine Warriors parted ways with head coach Seydou Zerbo on Monday following a 2-0 home defeat to Medeama SC in a Week 23 Ghana Premier League match on Sunday night.
Monday’s decision means Prosper Narteh Ogum remains the only Kotoko coach to start and complete a full football season under current Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Nana Yaw Amponsah.
The former WAFA head coach won the 2021/22 Ghana Premier League title in his maiden year at the club and that would be his only season in Kumasi following his surprising departure at the start of the current campaign.
Maxwell Konadu was in charge as Kotoko head coach when Nana Yaw Amponsah assumed office as new CEO of the club on Friday 7th August , 2020.
Konadu , a former striker of the Porcupine Warriors , was sacked following a Ghana Premier League Week 5 home defeat against Great Olympics at the Accra sport stadium on 17th December 2020.
The current Legon Cities manager only lasted six games in all competitions in the 2020/21 season under Nana Yaw Amponsah.
Assistant coach Johnson Smith took charge of the team for some time before former Black Stars head coach Mariano Barreto was bought in till the end of the season.
Hearts of Oak eventually won the league title and the FA Cup but Asante Kotoko got it right the following season by hiring former WAFA head trainer Dr. Prosper Narteh Ogum.
The performance , quality of play and the results were there for all to see under Ogum.
Ogum’s side of Thiery Etouga Mbella , Richmond Lamptey , Salifu Mudasiru , Richard Boadu , Ibrahim Imoro , Ismail Ganiyu , Georges Mfegues and co were the best football team in the country in the 2021/22 season. They won the league title with the most number of wins (19), the least number of defeats (5) and scored the most number of goals (48).
However at the start of the current campaign , the team was pulled apart. Imoro left to Al – Hilal in Sudan , Ganiyu left , Mudasiru went away on loan and Etouga Mbella , 21 goals in the 2021/22 league season also took his soccer career to Egypt.
Ogum shockingly announced his official resignation on 18th August 2022 by which time Kotoko had hired Seydou Zerbo to replace the Ghana Premier League winning coach already. The Burkinabe was sacked on Monday after a record of 26 matches played , 10 wins , 8 draws and 8 defeats in all competitions.
Monday’s decision means Dr. Prosper Narteh Ogum still remains the only coach to commence and complete a full season during the time of Nana Yaw Amponsah as Kotoko CEO.
Meanwhile Abdulai Gazale has been named as the interim head coach of the club as the team searches to reform the technical department.
