Angel Correa scored a stoppage-time equalizer to make sure the first Madrid Derby of the season ended with the spoils shared at the Civitas Metropolitano on Sunday night.
The opening minutes of the encounter were cagey with the first real chance of the match falling to Julian Alvarez. The Argentina shrugged off former Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger before testing goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois with a menacing strike.
Federico Valverde then pulled a save from Atletico custodian Jan Oblak on 17 minutes.
The first half ended scoreless, however, it was Carlo Ancelotti’s men who took the lead on 64 minutes when Vinicius Junior teed up unlikely scorer Eder Militao to slam home the opener.
Mayhem erupted in the stands following the goal, forcing referee Mateo Busquets Ferrer to take the players of both teams off the pitch for almost 20 minutes as projectiles were launched in Courtois’ goal.
When the game resumed, Atletico frantically searched for the equalizer which duly arrived with Correa rounding Courtois to draw his team level.
Marcos Llorente was sent off for Atletico Madrid in the 9th minutes of added time as the fierce derby ended 1-1.
Barcelona lead the La Liga standings with 21 points after 8 matches while Real Madrid are second with 18 points after 8 games contested. Diego Simeone’s side are third on the log with 16 points while Athletic Bilbao occupy the 4th position with 14 points.
