Black Stars Call-Up Has Opened Doors for Me Says Hafiz Wontah : Hafiz Wontah Bechem United attacker Hafiz Wontah Konkoni has stated that even though he did not get the opportunity to feature for the Black Stars in their 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualification game against Madagascar , the opportunity to be invited to the national alone has opened my doors for him.
The striker netted 15 goals for the Hunters as they finished third on the final league standings of the 2022/23 Ghana Premier League.
Hafiz Wontah became the first local player to be selected to the Black Stars under the tutelage of Chris Hughton.
Ghana drew 0-0 against the home team in Antananario on 18th June during MatchDay-Five of the 2023 AFCON qualification.
“The feeling for me is great. I did not get the chance to play the Madagascar game but the call-up alone has opened my doors for me and I am very happy.” , Hafiz Wontah said on Fox FM in Kumasi.
“As for the match they coach decided and I respected his decision but I am so happy” , he added.
The Bechem United reliable goal scorer also disclosed how his invitation to the Black Stars happened.
“I knew of my selection to the Black Stars two weeks before the list came out and so I was aware. The coach called me and had a discussion with me , he told me that I was one of the local players they are monitoring and so I should work hard.”
“He then told me that he will come and watch one of the games and indeed he came to watch our home game against Berekum Chelsea. The following week he called me that he was going to give me a call-up to the national team for the Madagascar game as he believes I can help the team and so that was how it all happened” , the striker explained.
“I can say that I have received a lot of offers and I am studying all of them to see which one will help my career. Right now I cannot say where my future lies , only God knows. After the Black Stars game I have been contacted by many agents and some clubs including Hearts of Oak and Medeama but Kotoko are not included and some teams from Tanzania too. In the coming days I will decide.”
“Let me add that my decision will not be based on just money. I want to go to a place where I will play all the time. If it was about the money for me then I would have left Bechem long time. I don’t want to go to a club where I will not get playing time and people will be saying whole lot of things. These days Ghanaian players fail to perform outside Ghana and I don’t want to fall into that category and God willing my case will not be like that when I leave.”
Hafiz has a running contract with Bechem United who are expected to sell their most reliable source of goals if the right offer arrives.
