Charles Taylor Explains Why He Did not Fail Abroad : Former Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko attacker Charles Taylor has explained why he should not be considered as one of the talented Ghanaian footballers who fail to succeed outside the country.
Each year a lot of Ghanaian soccer players leave the shores of Ghana to play abroad in their quest to seek greener pastures but plenty of them fail to succeed especially those who join North African clubs.
Taylor had his greatest playing days and is one of the few players to play for Accra Hearts of Oak S.C. and Asante Kotoko.
He’s arguably one of the greatest players to ever play the Ghana premier league and a key member of the famous “64 Battalion” squad of Accra Hearts of Oak S.C. that won the African Champions League in 2000 and consecutive Ghanaian league titles.
However , despite his enormous talent , Charles Taylor did not make any significant impact abroad.
“For me my case was different. I did not get the chance to play in Europe. My first deal outside Ghana was in Tunisia and over there it was not like I failed to play. What happened was that at the time only three foreign players could start a game and so I asked to come to Ghana to play on loan.
I played two seasons there before coming to Ghana again. The foreign players in the club we were about 9 and only 3 can start a match and I did not want to have limited playing time so I asked for the loan move” , Charles Taylor explained on Kumasi-based Fox FM.

That Tunisian club Taylor mentions is Etoile du Sahel where he played from 2004 to 2006 before rejoining Hearts of Oak in the Ghana Premier League.
“The deal I got in Europe was the Brescia deal that Stephen Appiah arranged for me but Hearts of Oak said the money was not enough for them and so they did not allow me to go. If I had gone there and then failed to deliver then I will accept that I failed abroad but that is not the case” , he added.
“Let us face the reality now. How many Ghanaian players are able to succeed in Tunisia or Egypt nowadays. There are almost none. When you travel , that is when you realize that we don’t have quality coaches here. You see the difference and that is why our players fail to replicate their form over there. They have excellent coaches there. But here what we have are local champions. If you cannot win games against Madagascar , Guinea and co , then what are you?” , Taylor quizzed.
He continued :
“One goalkeeper (Danlad Ibrahim) conceded 8 goals in one tournament but here you guys say he is the best. So you can clearly see that we are joking here”
