2023 AFCON Qualifiers : Captain Mohamed Salah and Marmoush on target as Egypt defeat Malawi to go top of Group D

Egypt Defeat Malawi to Go Top of Group D : Egypt national team bounced back to winning ways as they clinched a 2-0 home victory against Malawi on Friday night during Match-Day Three of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualification series as Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush fetched the goals for the home team.

The North African heavyweights were humbled by Ethiopia in their previous qualifying match in June 2022 in Lilongwe.

Liverpool ace winger slotted home the opener in the 20th minute from inside the area after meeting a fantastic cut-back by Mohamed Hamdy Sharaf of Pyramids.

In the 45th minute , the 2019 UEFA Champions League winner turned provider as he assisted Wolfsburg’s Omar Marmoush to score the second of the night for the Pharaohs with a deflected effort.

Egypt , finalists of the last AFCON tournament played in Cameroon , now lead Group D on the basis of the head to head rule.

Egypt and Guinea , who defeated Ethiopia by 2-0 on Friday in Casablanca , are on six points each after three games played but as Salah’s team won 1-0 against Guinea in June 2022 , they are top of the table.

What next on Match-Day Four?

Guinea take on Ethiopia in Rabat on March 27th whilst the most successful national team in the history of African football go to Lilongwe for their reverse match against The Flames on March 28th.
