Ghana Football Association wins massive court case over GNPC’s Black Stars Sponsorship !

GFA Wins Massive Court Case : The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has won a huge legal decision against Westhead Limited at the High Court in Accra on Friday.

The High Court, General Jurisdiction 4, presided over by Her Ladyship Mrs. Olivia Obeng Owusu, dismissed the Writ commenced by Westhead Limited against the Ghana Football Association in respect of the sponsorship of the Black Stars by Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC).

In dismissing the case against the GFA, the High Court also awarded cost of Twenty Thousand Ghana Cedis (GHc20,000) against Westhead Limited.

The Ghana Football Association was represented by Lawyer Agbesi Kwadzo Dzakpasu, who is also the Chairman of the Appeals Committee of the GFA and the President of the Greater Accra Branch of the Ghana Bar Association.

It would be recalled that in 2014, three former senior football administrators instituted a suit against the Association demanding in excess of One Million dollars (US$1,350,000.00) as agency fee for what they claim to be fees for their role in brokering the Black Stars-GNPC sponsorship deal.

Westhead claimed that they brokered the deal which saw the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation pump $3m per year to sponsor the senior national team for three football seasons (from 2012/13, 2013/14 to 2014/15).

Westhead Limited, went to court in April 2014 to claim 15 percent of the entire $9m deal for their role in securing the deal but Mr. Ato Ahwoi, who was Board Chairman of Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) at the time denied the involvement and role of Westhead Limited as brokers of the deal, threatening that his outfit GNPC would cancel the deal if the Ghana Football Association (GFA) paraded a private outfit, Westhead Limited as brokers of the deal.

The Kurt Simeon-Okraku administration inherited the case and has continued to fight the case in court until judgement was delivered on Friday, June 23, 2023.

The decision takes away a huge potential debt that was hanging over the heads of the GFA for a decade now.
