Hearts of Oak Defeat Accra Lions to Go Third : With a spirited performance , Accra Hearts of Oak bounced back to winning ways with a 1-0 victory over Accra Lions during Week 24 of the 2022/23 betPawa Ghana Premier League on Wednesday night at the Accra sports stadium.
It was Congolese playmaker Linda Mtange who scored the only goal of the game in the 64th minute to open his Hearts of Oak goal account.
The Phobians , hammered 3-0 at Karela United last weekend , needed a positive reaction against a very good Accra Lions side.
Linda was at the right place at the right time in the Lions box to slot home the winning goal from a rebound as goalkeeper Owusu failed to deal with a Samuel Inkoom shot.
The win takes Hearts of Oak to third place on the league table on 38 points in 24 matches ; just three points adrift league leaders Aduana FC who were held by Berekum Chelsea on Wednesday.
David Ocloo had the chance to play reliable center back Caleb Amankwah as he served his red card suspension by missing the Karela United trip. The former WAFA defender started alongside Konadu Yiadom in central defennce.
Samuel Inkoom after missing in action for some time now started at right back with Dennis Korsah handed his normal left back role.
In midfield Eric Esso , Yaw Amankwah Baafi and Glid Otanga started once again whilst Benjamin York , Albert Dieudonne and Linda Mtange were the attackers but Richmond Ayi did not form part of the team today as Eric Ofori played.
In the 24th minute Lions came very close to scoring but Ofori Antwi produced a great save as the first half ended without any goals. The game was still very close in the second period until Linda , voted man of the match , gave the home side the breakthrough.
What Does This Victory Mean ?
The slim win sees Hearts of Oak at the third position on the league standings on 38 points taken from 24 matches ; just three points away from the tally of league leaders Aduana FC (41 points in 24 games).
This is so despite the fact that the Phobians lost all two league meetings against the Dormaa-based team this season.
Whilst Hearts of Oak edged out Lions , the Ogya Boys were rather held for a 1-1 drawn game at Chelsea at the Golden City Park in a match that saw two late goals.
First , former Asante Kotoko midfielder Douglas Owusu Ansah in the 88th minute for Samuel Fabin’s team before Mezack Afriyie netted the equalizer in the 92nd minute for the 2011 champions of Ghana.
