“I still seriously worry about the tactical approach of the team” – Gary Lineker on England at Euro 2024

“I still seriously worry about the tactical approach of the team” – Gary Lineker on England at Euro 2024

Former England captain Gary Lineker says he is not worried about the tactics of the Three Lions of England at the ongoing European Football Championship in Germany.

Gareth Southgate’s England topped Group C with 5 points, but has not been impressive in all three group stage games.

Former England captain Gary Lineker was speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast and said:

“I still seriously worry about the tactical approach of the team. Phil Foden is one of the best number 10s in world football. I think there is a lack of balance to the team and I find it really, really strange that he doesn’t play somebody on the left side that plays on the left side.

“I saw a little bit of spark in the players [against Slovenia] that if they do get the right set-up and play high, aggressively and brave, then I think they could do really well. Do I think he [Gareth Southgate] will play that way? No, I don’t sadly.”, the former FC Barcelona attacker and current BBC presenter said.

The 1966 World Cup winners will defeated Serbia 1-0, drew 1-1 and 0-0 against Denmark and Slovenia respectively and will now face another tricky opponents, Slovakia, in the Round of 16 on 30th June.

Lineker continued:

“What I did see in the second half against Slovenia was energy and I haven’t seen energy – apart from the first half an hour of the first game – in the other performances.

“But in this particular performance – apart from the fact they didn’t score any goals against the team ranked 4,000th in the world – I thought there was enough in there.

“There were downsides, but there were real positives – particularly when Cole Palmer came on. We know we have got a lot of talented players but this kid might well be the best of the lot.”
