Joao Felix Insulted by Atletico Madrid Fans : Back from his loan stint at Chelsea, Joao Felix (23) was heavily whistled and insulted by Atltéico de Madrid supporters on Monday during the reception of Granada (3-1, 1st day of 2023/24 La Liga).
Joao Felix (23 years old) found Atlético de Madrid in a very hostile climate on Monday evening.
Returning from his six-month loan to Chelsea between January and June, the Portuguese was attacked by his club’s supporters when they received Granada (3-1), counting for the first day of La Liga.
Placed on the bench of substitutes, the Portuguese was copiously whistled by the Civitas Metropolitano stadium when his face appeared on the billboards.
His declaration of love to Barça makes Atlético fans jump
The hatred of the Atlético public manifested itself a little more violently after the final whistle.
While he was on the pitch to warm up with the players who had not played, he was the target of insults from the more radical fringe of the fans still present in the stadium.
These invectives finally led the staff to send all the substitutes back to the locker room.
Why such hatred?
The Atlético public have not forgotten the recent statements of Joao Felix, who has never convinced since his recruitment against 130 million euros in 2019.
The midfielder repeated that he hoped to continue at Chelsea before until his loan ends. More recently, his declaration of love to Barça has not passed at all.
“I would love to play for Barça, he said in an interview. It has always been my dream since I was a child. It has always been my first choice and I would love to join Barça.”
During his loan to London, he also criticized the game of Diego Simeone, coach of Atlético, to whom he still belong.
Joao Felix’s situation seems to embarrass everyone: the club, the player and the fans. Atlético tried to find a way out for their striker, in vain.
The former Benfica player was retained for pre-season preparation without playing a minute.
For lack of a solution, Diego Simeone keeps him in the group where he is relegated very far in the hierarchy of attackers (behind Griezmann, Morata, Memphis and Correa).
“If he is better than his teammates, he will play”
Asked about the subject, Diego Simeone defended the Portuguese by assuring that he could have his chance if he stays.
“The League has started, he is with us, he knows what we need and what we want and ask for, he said. He is in competition with Memphis, Griezmann, Morata and Correa and if he is better than them, he will play.”
