Not the first time in his illustrious coaching career, Fenerbahce boss Jose Mourinho was once more involved in a controversy after he was sent off by French referee Clement Turpin in his side’s 1-1 Europa League draw against Manchester United on Thursday night.
The former Man United trainer has now responded to his sending off sarcastically saying that Turpin’s decision to show him a red card shows why he “is one of the best referees in the world”.
“He (the referee) told me something incredible. He could see the action in the box and my behaviour on the touchline.
“I congratulate him because it is incredible his peripheral vision. During the game, 100 miles per hour, he had one eye on the penalty situation and one eye on the bench and my behaviour. That is why he is one of the best referees in the world.”
Joshua Zirkzee teed up Christian Eriksen to fire United in front on 15 minutes following a swift counter-attack by Erik ten Hag’s side. However, it was the home side that continued to create more dangerous chances with goalkeeper Andre Onana called upon to make a series of athletic saves.
Jose Mourinho’s charges finally got their equalizer five minutes after the break when Morocco forward Youssef En Nesri jumped highest to head home a Saint-Maximin delightful cross.
United are winless in three games in the competition and occupy the 21st position on the Europa League league phase standings with 3 points while Fenerbahce are at a respectable 14th with 5 points.
