Joseph Amoako, 20, came to Sweden from Ghana to play football in Helsingborgs IF. Now he is sentenced to two years in prison and deportation for a rape against a 16-year-old girl earlier this year.
Joseph Amoako, who at the time was 19, shared an apartment with another player from Ghana who was also loaned by Helsingborgs IF.
On May 28 this year, they had invited the 16-year-old and her friend to a party.
The four had gotten to know each other a couple of weeks earlier and had met a few times. However, it turned out that it was only the four of them in the apartment.
The 16-year-old had told her parents that she was going to camp with the school so that she and her friend could secretly sleep over in the apartment.
The rape took place during the night when the 16-year-old had fallen asleep. She woke up, interrupted Amoako’s rape and was helped and supported by her friend who was in the same room. The 16-year-old thought that what happened was not a crime because she and her friend had come to the apartment themselves.
It was only when she spoke with the school nurse after the summer that she reported the incident to the police, according to the judgement.
The district court’s assessment is that there is a reasonable explanation for her not reporting the incident until later and that it does not detract from the value of her information, says councilor Therese Larsson Dozet.
Those involved largely agree on what happened. Joseph Amoako, on the other hand, denies the rape itself. According to him, nothing sexual happened.
According to the district court, the 16-year-old told about the incident in a credible way and there was also a witness in the room where it happened.
That is unusual that there are witnesses present at this type of crime. The friend has been heard during the trial and her testimony has become important for the outcome of the case, says Therese Larsson Dozet.
Joseph Amoako, who has now turned 20 years old, is therefore sentenced to two years in prison for rape.
He must also be deported and may not return to Sweden for ten years. He must also pay damages to the girl.
