Morocco Withdraw from CHAN : Morocco say they will not be participating at the 2022 African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Algeria after Algeria authorities refused to authorize a direct flight from Rabat to Constantine.
Morocco were expected to defend their CHAN title in Algeria but diplomatic war between the two North African counties has had a toll on the CHAN tournament that kicked off Friday (Algeria 1 Libya 0).
Algeria leaders have proposed a Rabat – Tunis – Constantine route for the Moroccan delegation who preferred a direct flight to Algeria with the Royal Air Maroc.
“It is very unfortunate to deprive the Moroccan national team, which had been preparing seriously for six months to participate in CHAN and defend its title,” lamented the president of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) Fouzi Lekjaa on Friday.
“It is unfortunate that the team stays for hours at the airport waiting for authorization to take part in an African competition”, he added.
Morocco , Ghana , Sudan and Madagascar are in Group C and should the defending champions definitely fail to compete , the group will be reduced to three teams with no possibility of inviting a replacement team.
