13th African Games : Mukarama Abdulai Extra Time Winner Against Nigeria Wins Gold for Ghana in Women’s Football Final

kaaMukarama Abdulai winning goal against Nigeria was the biggest moment during the 2024 Africa Games Women’s football final as Ghana came from a goal down to defeat sworn rival Nigeria 2-1 at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium on Thursday night. 

The striker’s sensational strike found the bottom corner of the net, igniting jubilation among the fans at the stadium.

Her decisive goal, struck in the first half of extra time, secured the gold medal for Ghana and marked a significant upset as they dethroned Nigeria .The Nigerians entered the match undefeated and without conceding a goal in three previous games, while netting eight themselves.

Nigeria initially took the lead in the 23rd minute through Edeh Njideka, capitalising on an error by Ghana goalkeeper Afi Amenyeku. Despite a few close calls, Ghana rallied after the break, displaying greater determination and purpose.

Their persistence paid off in the 77th minute when Tracey Twum levelled the score with a powerful shot. Ghana continued to press forward, narrowly missing an opportunity to clinch victory in regulation time.

In extra time, Mukarama Abdulai emerged as the hero for Ghana. She did this by netting the winning goal in the 98th minute to seal the victory and spark celebrations among the home crowd.

Mukarama Abdulai International Career

She captained Ghana’s squad during the 2018 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Uruguay, where she won the Golden Boot for her tournament-best seven goals and two assists. She scored a hat-trick in the first match against the host country. In addition, she won the Bronze Ball. She was adjudged the Women’s footballer of the Year for 2018 by SWAG After her exploits with the team as she beat off competition from Grace Asantewaa and Faustina Ampah.

Mukarama made her debut during the first match of the tournament against Senegal and scored a goal to help Ghana seal a 2–0 victory.

The Ghana U20 side selected the talented footballer and made her the captain of a double friendly match against Morocco in November 2020. She made her debut in the first match on 23 November 2020 with Ghana suffering a 1–0 defeat, however in the second match on 30 November, she scored a brace to help Ghana win by 4–0.
