Former Manchester City defender Nedum Onuoha has been talking about the future of England manager Gareth Southgate after his team lost the Euro 2024 final to Spain on Sunday.
Real Sociedad winger Mikel Oyarzabal scored the final’s winning goal four minutes from time as Luis de la Fuente’s men clinched a 2-1 victory to become the tournament’s outright most successful team.
Southgate, a former manager of England U-21 national team, became interim Three Lions manager on 27th September, 2016 when he replaced Sam Allardyce who resigned.
The former Crystal Palace and Aston Villa defender was appointed on permanent basis on 15th November as he went ahead to qualify England to the 2022 FIFA World Cup where his team reached the semi-finals.
After finishing 3rd in the inaugural UEFA Nations League in 2018/19, Gareth Southgate took England to the final of Euro 2020, losing to Italy on penalties.
England, thus, became the first team to lose back-to-back European Football Championship finals when they lost last Sunday’s Euro final.
Therefore, it is not clear whether or not Southgate will remain in his role with his current contract set to expire in December 2024.
“I think Gareth Southgate will be leaving. He is one of the longest serving managers in national team competition currently and the stuff that he has done in the grand scheme of England history has been impressive.
There are obviously little bits in it that people don’t like but also if he was to leave today, you look at that team and it’s a really young exciting team potentially for someone to take.
He will look at it and think he has done a good job. He will probably be ready and young enough to go into club football. I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s his next move.”, the former City defender concluded.
