Ousmane Dembele for Barcelona Captaincy Role : With the departure of Sergio Busquets, FC Barcelona is looking for a new captain for the upcoming season and according to Sport, if Sergi Roberto and Marc-André ter Stegen seem the favorites to recover the armband, Ousmane Dembélé would be a credible candidate.
Arrived in August 2017 at FC Barcelona, Dembélé is now the third oldest player in the squad in terms of number of seasons spent at the club.
Trained at the club, Sergi Roberto began his professional career in 2010 and goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen has been present since 2014. According to Sport, the Frenchman would be one of the credible candidates for the post of captain for the coming season at Barça.
Xavi would appreciate Dembele’s involvement
Reigning Liga champion, the Catalan club lost Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba at the end of this last season. Gérard Pique had put an end to his career earlier. The logic would be to see Sergi Roberto or Marc-André ter Stegen recover the captain’s armband but Ousmane Dembélé would have good odds in the locker room.
As a reminder, FC Barcelona has operated in recent seasons with four captains. After Gérard Piqué’s retirement, Marc-André ter Stegen joined the foursome formed by Sergio Busquets, Sergio Roberto and Jordi Alba. In such a configuration, Ousmane Dembélé could therefore climb the hierarchy.
Xavi, the Barça coach, would appreciate the involvement of Ousmane Dembélé, far from his image at the start.
At 26, the former Borussia Dortmund would maintain a good relationship with the young players of the team, while being respected by all of his teammates. Under contract until 2024, the 2018 world champion could even extend his contract soon.
The winger did 35 games in all competitions last season , scoring 8 goals and 9 assists. After the 2022/23 league title, Ousmane Dembélé already expressed his desire to bring back the Champions League, which has eluded the Catalans since 2015.
Winner of the trophy in 2020 with Bayern Munich, Robert Lewandowski would also aspire, with his status, to the captaincy. Meanwhile the Barça squad will soon have to give its decision in a vote.
