The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has announced the appointment of former Asante Kotoko head coach Dr. Prosper Narteh Ogum as the new head coach of the Ghana U17 national team, the Black Starlets.
His dual appointment also sees him take on the role of Head of Coach Education, replacing Desmond Ofei. This decision comes as Ghana intensifies preparations for the upcoming WAFU Zone B U17 Boys Championship, scheduled to take place in Nigeria in September 2025.
The ex-WAFA boss was relieved of his duties at Kotoko towards the end of the 2024/25 Ghana Premier Leaue season as Toyota Cup-winning manager Karim Zito took over as interim boss.
New Leadership Ahead of Key Tournament
Dr. Ogum’s appointment is seen as a strategic move by the Executive Council of the GFA, with the WAFU U17 Championship serving as the qualifier for the 2025 U17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
This regional tournament is critical for the development and international exposure of Ghana’s budding football talent.
The GFA has placed its confidence in Dr. Ogum to guide the Black Starlets back to continental prominence, drawing on his experience in youth development and tactical expertise.
Transition in Coaching Staff
Dr. Ogum takes over from Coach Frimpong Manso, who has stepped aside to focus on his club responsibilities with Bibiani GoldStars. Manso’s departure is rooted in his upcoming campaign with GoldStars in the CAF Champions League — the club’s first-ever appearance in the competition following a historic Ghana Premier League title win.
The GFA extended its heartfelt appreciation to Coach Manso for his service and commitment to youth football in Ghana.

A Proven Track Record
Dr. Prosper Narteh Ogum brings a wealth of experience to his new role. He previously led Ghanaian giants Asante Kotoko to a league title and guided WAFA (West African Football Academy) to a notable second-place finish in the Ghana Premier League.
His coaching journey also includes spells with Ebusua Dwarfs and the Black Galaxies, Ghana’s home-based national team, where he served as assistant coach.
Known for his focus on player development and progressive football philosophy, Dr. Ogum is widely respected for nurturing young talent and creating cohesive, tactically astute teams.
His academic background in physical education and sports science further complements his practical coaching experience.
Focus on Talent Development
With the WAFU U17 Championship on the horizon, Dr. Ogum is expected to begin scouting and training sessions immediately to assemble a competitive and disciplined squad.
The GFA has reiterated its full support in providing all necessary technical and logistical resources to ensure optimal preparation for the championship.
The goal is clear: secure qualification for the 2025 U17 Africa Cup of Nations and restore Ghana’s reputation as a powerhouse in youth football.

Dual Role: Head of Coach Education
According to the Ghana FA, Dr. Ogum will also serve as the GFA’s Head of Coach Education. He replaces Desmond Ofei, who will now concentrate on his role as assistant coach of the senior national team, the Black Stars.
The GFA sees Dr. Ogum’s educational and leadership background as a strong fit for overseeing the development and certification of coaches across the country.
A New Era for the Black Starlets
The appointment of Dr. Ogum signals a renewed commitment to youth football and technical development within the Ghana Football Association.
As the Black Starlets prepare for a pivotal tournament in Nigeria, all eyes will be on Dr. Ogum to inspire a resurgence in Ghana’s U17 football success — one rooted in discipline, structure, and talent.
