Held at home by Liberia , South Africa in danger of not qualifying for the Africa Cup of Nations for the second consecutive time

South Africa Could Miss Out On The AFCON Again : The South African National Football Team remain without a victory in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualification series as they failed to win at home against Liberia despite taking a two-goal lead at the Orlando stadium in Johannesburg on Friday night.

Burnley’s 22-year old Lyle Foster did his personal best to net a brace to inspire his national team to victory by the Bafana Bafana team of Hugo Broos collapsed in the second half allowing the visitors to equalize both goals.

Tonia Tisdell scored in the 68th as Liberia started a great comeback. Mohammed Sangare then broke the hearts of the South African team with a stoppage time strike to close the game at 2-2.

Morocco have thus already become the first team to qualify to the 2023 AFCON finals with their six points in two games played in Group K as the FIFA World Cup semi-finalists are assured to finish at least second in the group that contains only three teams.

This is so due to the disqualification of Zimbabwe from the competition by CAF.

Liberia and South Africa have a point each after two matches contested.

The two teams contest for the other qualification berth from the group as Bafana Bafana now travel to Monrovia for the reverse match next week.

Hugo Broos and the South African team are winless in two qualifying games as Morocco defeated them 2-1 in Rabat in June 2022.

Bafana Bafana could therefore not qualify for the 2023 AFCON if they fail to get results in their next two games and it will be the second time running that they have failed to play at the continent’s biggest soccer event if their lackluster form continues.

South Africa has failed to also qualify for the FIFA World Cup since they hosted the world in 2010. They missed out in 2014 , 2018 and 2022.
