Spain defeated France 5-3 in 120 minutes to win the Paris 2024 Olympic men’s football tournament on Friday at the Parc des Princes.
Stuttgart midfielder Enzo Millot put the hosts ahead in the 11th minute before the Spanish Olympic team responded with three quickfire goals.
Fermin Lopez equalized in the 18th and made it 2-1 for Spain seven minutes later before Alex Baena of Villareal consolidated his team’s lead with a third in the 28th minute as La Roja completely dominated Thiery Henry’s France side in the first half.
France came into the second half strongly looking to stage a comeback and their incessant pressure to score paid dividends when AS Monaco player Maghens Akliouche netted in the 79th minute.
With the score at 3-2, France were awarded a penalty deep into additional time for which Jean-Philippe Mateta successfully converted to make it 3-3, pushing the Summer 2024 Olympics men’s football tournament final into extra time.
However, Spain proved superior in the extra 30 minutes, with substitute Sergio Camello bagging a spectacular brace in the 100th and 120th minutes to win the final 5-3 for La Roja.
Spain’s success at Paris 2024 means the European country has now won every tournament in which they have competed at least once bar the defunct FIFA Confederations Cup.
La Roja, who have won both the FIFA World Cup and UEFA Nations League once, defeated England in the Euro 2024 final to land their fourth European football championship title.
