StarTimes Spends Around 1 Million USD To Produce GPL Matches : Mrs. Akofa Benson the General Manager of StarTimes Ghana , official broadcasters of the Ghana Premier League says her outfit spends around 1 million US Dollars as production cost of telecasting live matches of the country’s elite soccer competition.
StarTimes competed against state broadcaster Ghana Broadcasting Corporation for the rights in December 2019 and it was the former that won it.
The GBC bid also had conditions attached to the bid, among them a revenue share on any Title Sponsorship that the GFA secured for its competitions (GBC wanted 20% share) and after four seasons , the StarTimes Ghana boss believes the GFA made the right choice.
“In 2016 before we came in there were only one or two live games but we are showing four live games per match-week and sometimes we even show five matches in a week.” , Mrs. Akofa said.
“At the time we came in , no Ghanaian media house was interested in the domestic league , we decided to do all the head-lifting because we saw in the local game wat it could become and so we decided to put money in it , we invested heavily in production and promotions as well.
“We spend an average of a million USD in producing games for a season. Then there is also the part that you are doing the promotions on radio , TV and billboards. Today we have brough the GPL from the era where no one wanted to be associated with it , no one wanted to be a part of it” , she added.
The upcoming 2023/24 season will be the fifth season of StarTimes as official broadcasters of the Ghana Premier League.
