The maiden edition of the Otumfuo Smash table tennis tournament takes place on Saturday October 28th at the Ahinsan Youth Center in Kumasi.
The one-day table tennis event is organized by the Ghana Table Tennis Association in collaboration with Opemsour FM and sponsored by Stanbic Bank. Other partners are Volta River Authority , SIC and Total Family Health Organization.
At least 200 male and female athletes are expected to take part in the competition.
The athletes were drawn from various parts of the country with at least fifty of them based in the Ashanti region.
Format of the Competition
The competition is divided into men’s and women’s categories.
There male’s tournament is a straight knockout event and it will begin from the 128th round , to the Round 64 through Round 32 , Round 16 , Round 8 , Quarter-finals , Semi-finals, and the grande finale.
In the female’s competition, there will be 8 groups in all with four players in each group and players will compete to reach the grande finale.
Prize Money
The prize monies are the same for all the categories. The winners of both the male’s and female’s tournament will receive a cash prize of GHC 4, 000 each. The runners-up pocket GHC 2, 000 each whilst the 3rd and 4th placed players will take home GHC 1, 000 each.
“The popularity of table tennis in the Ashanti region seems to have dwindled and that is why we want to revive the interest in the region by organizing this event. Traditionally Kumasi and its environs used to be stronghold of table tennis but over the years , things went down and we want to bring the interest back here. Let me also add that , the competition has received the blessings of the Asantehene Otumfour Osei Tutu II. ” , President of the Ghana Table Tennis Association , Mr. Mawuko Afadzinu told the Kumasi media on Friday as reported by Ghanasportsmarket.com.
The event starts at 8 : 00 AM and closes at 16 : 00 GMT at the Ahinsan Youth Center.
