Nana Yaw Amponsah on Winning GPL With Seydou Zerbo : Asante Kotoko Chief Executive Nana Yaw Amponsah has revealed that the club’s management was compelled to dismiss head coach Seydou Zerbo pressure from supporters of the club and that the club still had the chance to defend the league title before Zerbo was shown the exit.
The Burkina Faso trainer was sacked on March 27th following a home league defeat to Medeama SC but Amponsah discloses that the decision would not have been taken under normal circumstance.
“We as management wanted Seydou Zerbo to stay as the head coach of the club but we picked an intel that he will be attacked by the fans and we did not want that to happen because this has happened in the club before and it is not in the best interest of the club if that should happen again.” , Nana Yaw Amponsah told Oyerepa Sports.
The CEO continued to make more revelations :
“When we engaged him, he also confirmed that the Burkina Faso Embassy here in Ghana have also informed him that this is the information they received.
“Even before we sacked him, we still had the chance to win the Premier League title and if you bring in a new coach, we were not sure if he would make that impact we want but we had no option but to sack him because, at a point, there is a fact that the CEO must be sacrificed or the coach,” he added.
“Even after losing the home game to Medeama , we still had the chance to win the league with Seydou Zerbo because the analysis we did after the first round of the league showed that teams were struggling to create chances against us.
But last season teams were creating too many chances against us. Even last season we lost home games to King Faisal and Chelsea but we still won the league.
The problem was that we were wasting too many chances. After the first half of the season we had created 84 decent scoring chances but we scored about 20 or so. So we did not want to sack him (Zerbo) because we knew we still had a chance of defending the league title with him.”
