Zamalek Eliminated from 2022/23 CAF CL : Zamalek SC failed to reach the knockout stage of the CAF Champions League for the third successive season after finishing third in Group D on Friday.
The five-time winners of the Champions League went out of this year’s competition despite a 4-3 home victory over Al – Merreikh of Sudan on Friday night.
Mostafa Shalaby and Nasser Mansy scored two quick-fire goals in the 1st and 3rd minutes as the Egyptian giants took a 2-0 lead.
Ramadan Agab pulled a goal back for the visitors at the Cairo International stadium on just the 7th minute.
In the second half Algozoli Hussein Nooh Mohamed equalized for Al – Merreikh three minutes after the break before Brazilian Paulo Sergio netted in the 56th minute to put the away team ahead.
Zamalek however reorganized to avoid an embarrassing defeat in front of their home fans as Nasser Mansy shook the back of the net two more times in the 64th and 94th minutes to register a hat trick as the Royal Club won the match by 4-3.
Having finished third on 7 points in 6 group stage matches , Esperance de Tunis on 10 points and CR Belouizdad on 9 points advance from the group.
Zamalek thus failed to advance to the knockout round of the 2022/23 Champions League and it is the third time in a row they have left the competition after group play with their last knockout appearance dating back to the 2019/20 season.
Meanwhile Al Ahly contest their last group stage match of the CAF Champions League Group B on Saturday night against Al – Hilal Omdurman.
The masters of the competition must win in order to advance.
