2022 CHAN : The numbers behind the tournament that you should know

2022 CHAN Facts : The African Nations Championship (CHAN) will take place from Friday January 13th to Saturday February 4th in Algeria.

The Black Galaxies of Ghana are in Group C and open their tournament against Madagascar on Sunday 15th January.

Ghana then take on Sudan four days later before wrapping up their group play against Morocco on January 23rd.

Here’s everything you need to know about the competition.

Two

This is the most number of grande finals played by a team without winning the competition. Ghana in 2009 and 2014 and Mali in 2016 and 2020.

Three

Of the 18 coaches present in this 2023 tournament, only three are not from the continent. They are the French Corentin Martins coach of Libya, the Serbian Milutin Sredojević coach of Uganda, and the Portuguese Pedro Gonçalves coach of Angola.

Four
The 32 matches of the championship will be played in four different cities. Algiers will host the inaugural match and the final, while Oran will host the match for 3rd place. There will be four enclosures selected to host this first CHAN with 18 teams.

The May 19, 1956 Stadium (Annaba): Group B

The Chahid Hamlaoui Stadium (Constantine): Group C

The Miloud Hadefi Stadium (Oran): groups D and E

Also four nations have won the previous editions. Morocco and the DRC are the most successful with two victories each. Behind them are the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia and the Libya who have each won the competition once.

Five

As the number of groups at this tournament. Eighteen selections made up of local players will take part in the competition. The formations were split into five pools, three groups of four and two groups of three. The first two of groups A, B, and C, as well as the only first of groups D and E will qualify for the quarter-finals.

Seven

The CHAN will kick off this Friday, January 13 with the opening match between Algeria and Libya at the Nelson Mandela stadium.

This is the 7th edition of the tournament. The first edition took place in Côte d’Ivoire in 2009 with the participation of 8 teams. In the final, DR Congo beat Ghana 2-0 to win the first-ever trophy.
