Former Bayern Leverkusen youth team coach Sebastian Barnes says he applied for the head coach role of Hearts of Oak two times in the past but he did not have the required coaching badge to be the head coach of a team in the Ghana Premier League.
Barnes is currently the head of scouting department of the Phobians and is a key part of the Hearts of Oak technical team for the 2023/24 league season.
“I have applied for the Hearts of Oak job two times in the past. Before Samuel Boadu took over as Hearts coach , I had sat down with Togbe Afede in his office and we talk.
But the issue was that I had UEFA B coaching license and so I was not eligible to coach as head coach in the Ghana Premier League unless I have the CAF Licence A or its equivalent .” , Sebastian Barnes revealed to Ghanasportspage.com.
According to the former Ghana youth international player , he has unsuccessfully applied for the Hearts of Oak top coaching job two times but he believes he has a point to prove in his new portfolio at the Phobian side.
“So I had to go back , I left and so I applied for the head coach job two times. So they came now for me to become the head of scouting and know the system here before possibly I can go for the head coach role. That is how I accepted the head of scouting of the club and in a month and half , Hearts of Oak have seen the kind of work I have done so far.
“I was part of everything in terms of the new players who arrived this season. The likes of Karikari , Kashala and all of them I was part. I was the advisor to the technical director. You can see that is a combination of young and experienced players and with time , Hearts of Oak will do well” , the former Hearts of Oak player added.
Meanwhile Barnes also spoke about the team’s difficult start to the new Ghana Premier League season (1 win , 2 defeats and 1 draw) as he believes it will take some time for the team to be in the right shape.
“As for me my job was to scout players , recommend to the club and that is what I did. You know the technical team is new and most of the players too are also new and so it will take time for the team to start to know each other. I think with time things will begin to be nice , there is more room for improvement. For me I have done my job and the rest is for the head coach , he has to know what tactics to use and how to blend the materials available to him” , Sebastian Barnes told Ghanasportspage.com.
