Chelsea Spank Shamrock Rovers: Chelsea secured a comprehensive 5-1 victory against Shamrock Rovers to go top of the UEFA Conference League on Thursday night.
The Blues, who have 34 points after 16 games and are just two adrift of leaders Liverpool in the Premier League, made it six wins out of six in UEFA’s third-tier competition.
Marc Guiu’s hit a hat-trick to help Enzo Maresca’s side sweep aside the Ireland team Shamrock Rovers with the other strikes coming from Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Marc Cucurella. Markus Poom netted a goal of solace for the team from Hibernia.
The 18-year-old Spaniard made the most of a disastrous defensive mix-up between Darragh Burns and Leon Pohls to shoot Chelsea ahead on 22 minutes.
Poom then sent the away fans into a state of frenzy when his shot deflected off Cesare Casadei four minutes later to bring Shamrock on level terms.
Another defensive gaffe was capitalized by Guiu in the 34th minute, before Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall gave them breathing space with a composed finish five minutes before half-time.
And then the teenager grabbed his third as he guided in Noni Madueke’s teasing cross in first-half stoppage time.
Marc Cucurella finished off a slick passing move just before the hour mark to make it 5-1 for his second goal in as many games. The Blues had already qualified for the last 16 of the competition but this win kept them perfect on Thursday night as Chelsea spank Shamrock Rovers.
