Ghana Premier League All Time Top Scorers: Top-tier league football in Ghana has been graced by a plethora of remarkable finishers from the inception of the First Division in 1958 to the turn of the 21st century.
From the word go, the Ghana First Division saw a myriad of legendary scorers who had the knack of putting the ball in the back of the net such as the monstrous Kwasi Owusu ”Powerhouse”. The country’s foremost league continued to have extraordinary poachers in the early 1990s when the championship was professionalized and iconic figures like Mohammed Choo, Anane Kobo, and Kofi Deblah come to mind.
At the turn of the 21st century, Ishmael Addo emerged as a generational striking talent.

1.Dan Owusu – 93 goals
The clinical finisher racked up 93 league goals between 1972 and 1980 for Bofoakwa Tano, Asante Kotoko, and BA United, with 83 of his strikes happening in the colors of the Sunyani-based side, Bofoakwa.
Owusu, who was regarded as the finest offensive midfielder in the land in the 1970s, was the first man to win three successive Ghana Premier League top scorer awards having clinched the prizes with 24 goals in 1974, 26 in 1975, and 28 in 1976. Ishmael Addo would equal the record in 2001 after 25 years.
In the twilight of his career, the GPL legend briefly represented Kotoko and BA United where he added 3 and 7 goals respectively.
2.Peter Lamptey – 87 goals
Nicknamed the ”goal thief”, Peter Lamptey was reputed for his consistent scoring prowess for Hearts of Oak, helping them to five league titles in 1971, 1973, 1976, 1978, and 1979.
Lamptey’s haul includes 26 efforts to win the First Division top scorer prize in 1973.
3.George Alhassan – 79 goals
The Great Olympics icon led the Wonder Club to the 1974 Ghana Premier League and without his strikes, the title would have been harder to secure.
Alhassan, a two-time AFCON winner with Ghana, provided his efforts during two separate stints with Olympics.
4.Opoku Afriyie – 69 goals
Opoku Afiyie, who is Asante Kotoko’s all time top scorer is the fourth poacher on the Ghana Premier League All Time Top Scorers chart with 66 goals. His scoring cleverness and penchant for wonder goals earned him the moniker ”Bayie” which translate into English as ”Wizard”.
The Ghana football icon picked up two top scorer awards in 1979 and 1981 and powered Kotoko to two league honors before taking his career to rivals Hearts of Oak where he scored 7 times in a less successful stint.
5.Kwasi Owusu – 69 goals
The gangling forward played in the Ghana Premier League between 1976 to 1986 and bagged 69 goals for Bofoakwa Tano.
Owusu, who also netted 33 times for Ghana, made the most of his imposing frame as he scored plenty of headers.
6.Ishmael Addo – 67 goals
The intelligent goal scorer set the benchmark for other poachers starting from the late 90s into the early years of the 21st century, notching up three GPL top scorer awards with 19 goals in 1999, 21 in 2000, and 22 in 2001.
Addo, after series of stints abroad, returned to the Ghana Premier League, but he could only add five strikes to his tally.
7.Mohammed Choo – 60 goals
Regarded as one of the greatest Real Tamale United players of all time, Choo was an excellent striker who dazzled GPL fans with his scoring charm.
The RTU great produced 60 strikes between 1975 and 1994 and was top scorer of the Ghanaian championship on two occasions.
8.Bernard Dong Bortey – 54 goals
The Hearts of Oak folk hero had the knack of scoring all manner of goals – freekicks, penalties, long-range screamers, and headers.
Bortey achieved significant success at Hearts in a nine-year spell, 2001 to 2010. After firing 46 times for the Phobians in the league including 18 efforts in 2002 as joint league top scorer, the talented footballer signed for Aduana FC and added 8 more goals.
9.Anane Kobo – 53 goals
Anane Kobo, the second RTU legend on the Ghana Premier League all time top scorers rankings won two GPL leading scorer prizes in 1983 and 1994 with 16 and 14 goals in that order.
He scored 40 goals on the books of the Tamale side before adding a few more at Asante Kotoko and BA United.
10.Abukari Gariba – 53 goals
The lethal finisher was popularly referred to as ”Goal na me hwehwe” which translates into English as ”Goal is what I look for” for his killer instinct in front of goal.
He netted a goal each in the two-legged final of the 1970 Africa Cup of Champions Clubs as Kotoko won their maiden continental title.
11.Kofi Deblah – 49 goals
The Ashantigold hero picked up the top scorer award in the 1995-96 and 1996-97 seasons. After racking up 38 times across two seasons, Deblah went to Liberty Professionals where he added 11 strikes.
12.Eric Bekoe – 48 goals
The smart forward scored 5 goals for Liberty Professionals, 13 for Heart of Lions, 17 for Asante Kotoko, 5 for Berekum Chelsea, and 8 for Hasaacas.
Eric, who scored 4 goals in 12 caps for Ghana, won the 2007/08 Ghana Premier League top scorer award as Kotoko annexed the silverware.
13.Charles Asampong Taylor – 46 goals
The iconic figure was joint top scorer of the 2002 Ghana Premier League alongside Hearts of Oak teammate Dong Bortey.
Taylor’s goals came across his stints with Great Olympics, Hearts, and Asante Kotoko.
14.Alex Asamoah – 46 goals
The veteran attacker came to prominence when at Berekum Arsenal where his 9 goals in the 2005 GPL season attracted the attention of Ashantigold to sign him.
With the Miners, Asamoah aka ”Makwekwe” netted 17 times across two seasons before Asante Kotoko made the move for the best striker in the country in 2008. Alex scored 16 goals to win the goal king prize of the season in 2008-09.
Following stints outside Ghana, he returned to the GPL to score four times for Techiman Eleven Wonders.
15.Emmanuel Quarshie – 47 goals
Potentially the greatest ever Sekondi Hasaacas player, Quarshie was an outstanding goal scorer from a midfield position.
He realized 47 efforts in the Ghanaian top-tier game from 1977 to 1983 before Egypt’s Zamalek came for his signature.
16.Robert Hammond – 45 goals
Hammond formed part of the legendary Hearts of Oak ”fearsome five” of the 1970s.
He scored 33 of his strikes for Hearts while the remainder happened at Great Olympics.
