TOP 15 : Ranking of the Ghanaian players with the most trophies won in European football and abroad

Top 15 Most Successful Ghanaian Players in Europe : As Thomas Partey and his team Arsenal continue to lead the race for the Premier League title this season , we take a look at the Ghanaian footballers who won the most number of trophies in European football and outside the shores of Ghana. 

The country has produced thousands of soccer stars who excited European soccer fans with their talent but which Ghanaians lifted the most laurels?

GhanaSportsMarket.com takes a look at the Top 15 list.

 

15.Ibrahim Tanko – 3 titles lifted 

Only five Ghanaian players have ever won the prestigious UEFA Champions League competition and the current Black Meteors of Ghana and Accra Lions head coach is one of them.

Tanko does not boast of plenty club titles but there is no problem since he touched the biggest one.

2 Bundesliga honors with Borussia Dortmund in 1994–95 and 1995–96.

1 UEFA Champions League with Borussia Dortmund in 1996–97.

 

14.Kevin-Prince Boateng – 4 trophies 

1 Serie A title with AC Milan in 2010–11.

1 Supercoppa Italiana with AC Milan in 2011.

1 DFB-Pokal in 2017–18 with Eintracht Frankfurt.

1 La Liga in 2018–19 with FC Barcelona.

 

13.Stephen Appiah “Tornado” – 4 Trophies won

The iconic former skipper of the Black Stars of Ghana played for clubs in Italy , Turkey and Serbia during his soccer career abroad.

Appiah’s first trophy on foreign soil , after leaving Hearts of Oak , was at Parma AC ; the 2002 Coppa Italia.

The former Ghana Premier League midfielder replaced Hidetoshi Nakata in the 41st minute as Parma then managed by Pietro Carmignani defeated Juventus by 1-0 to lift the Cup on 10th May 2002.

On 3rd August 2003 , now a Juventus player , Appiah won the 2003 Supercoppa Italiana as he lasted the full 90 minutes with The Old Ladies winning the Super Cup on penalties. The great Marcello Lippi was the Juve head coach.

Did Appiah win the Serie A ? Officially no because the 2004/05 season won by Juventus was revoked and it doesn’t count for Tornado.

12.Karim Abdul Razak “Golden Boy” – 5 trophies

1 North American Soccer League season in 1978 with New York Cosmos.

1 African Cup Winners’ Cup in 1983 with Arab Contractors SC.

1 Côte d’Ivoire Premier Division in 1989 with Africa Sports.

1 Côte d’Ivoire Cup in 1989 with Africa Sports.

1 Coupe Houphouët-Boigny in 1989 with Africa Sports.

 

11.Adam Larsen Kwarasey – 5 titles 

1 Norway National League / Tippeligaen with Strømsgodset in 2013.

1 Norwegian Football Cup with Strømsgodset in 2010.

1 MLS Cup in 2015 at Portland Timbers.

1 Norway National League / Tippeligaen with Rosenborg in 2016.

1 Norwegian Football Cup in 2016 with Rosenborg

 

10.Rashid Sumaila – 5 titles lifted 

1 South Africa Premier Soccer League in 2013–14 with Mamelodi Sundowns.

1 Kuwait Emir Cup at Qadsia SC in 2014–2015.

1 Kuwait Premier League at Qadsia SC in 2015–2016.

1 Kuwait Crown Prince Cup in 2017–2018 with Qadsia SC.

1 Serbian SuperLiga with Red Star Belgrade in 2018–19.

 

9.Asamoah Gyan ” Baby Jet” – 5 Trophies

Even though Gyan , Ghana’s all time top scorer played in Italy for Udinese and Modena , Stade Rennes in France and Sunderland in England , he did not win any silverware on European soil.

The five trophies he won all came at Al Ain in the United Arab Emirates.

3 UAE Pro League titles in 2012 , 2013 and 2014.

1 UAE President’s Cup in 2014

1 UAE Super Cup in 2012

 

8.Abedi Ayew – 5 trophies won

2 French Division honors with Marseille in 1990–91 and 1991–92.

1 UEFA Champions League in 1992–93 with Marseille.

7.Jordan Ayew – 6 titles lifted

1 Ligue 1 title with Marseille in 2009–10.

3 Coupe de la Ligue honors in 2009–10, 2010–11 and 2011–12 at Marseille.

2 Trophée des Champions with Marseille in 2010 and 2011.

 

6.Andre Ayew – 6 trophies won

2 Coupe de la Ligue titles in 2010–11 and 2011–12 at Marseille

5.Harrison Afful – 8 honors

The tiny full-back did not enjoy European football but it did not stop him from having a respectable career outside Ghana.

4 Tunisian Ligue Professionnelle at Espérance de Tunis in 2009–10, 2010–11, 2011–12 and 2013–14.

4.Sulley Ali Muntari – 8 Trophies lifted

1 FA Cup with Portsmouth in 2008

2 Supercoppa Italiana with Inter Milan in 2008 and 2010

3.Kwadwo Asamoah – 13 trophies lifted

6 Serie A honors with Juventus in 2012–13, 2013–14, 2014–15, 2015–16, 2016–17 and 2017–18.

3 Supercoppa Italiana in 2012, 2013 and 2015.

What is missing from Asamoah’s trophy cabinet is the UEFA Champions League which his team lost the finals in 2015 and 2017.

Nevertheless that is significant success for a footballer who started at a youth soccer club in Asokwa , a suburb of Kumasi.

2.Michael Essien – 13 titles won

In Europe , it is 13-13 between Kwadwo Asamoah and Michael Essien but clearly the midfield maestro Essien won the heaviest laurels as Kwadwo lacks Europe’s most coveted trophy.

1.Samuel Kuffour – 14 Trophies won 

The tough-tackling center-back is the most successful Ghanaian footballer abroad of all time with his 14 titles.

Beginning his soccer journey most notably at Alhaji Karim Grusah’s King Faisal Babes in Kumasi , Kuffour left a great legacy in Munich.

6 Bundesliga honours in1996–97, 1998–99, 1999–2000, 2000–01, 2002–03 and 2004–05.

4 DFB-Pokal titles in 1997–98, 1999–2000, 2002–03 and 2004–05.

2 DFB-Ligapokals in 2000, 2004
