Hits and Misses from Man City 3 Bayern 0 CL Game : Manchester City take a big advantage in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final tie against Bayern Munich after imposing an emphatic 3-0 defeat against the Bavarians.
Bayern Munich were largely outclassed in a long night for the Bavarian defence. After half an hour of very balanced play, the Citzens took the advantage on a marvelous long shot from Spanish midfielder Rodri in the 27th minute.
In the second half , Pep Guardiola’s men withstood Bayern’s light assaults for a time before striking again thanks to Bernardo Silva and Erling Haaland in the 70th and 76th minutes respectively.
Man City already have a foot and a half in the semi-finals of Europe’s premier competition but this is the Champions League full of shocking outcomes.
We take a look at the hits and flops of the game.
The Hits :
1. Impassable Akanji – A Big Hit
Manuel Akanji was imperial in this right corridor or even in the central defence of City. In the first half, the Swiss defender offered nothing to Kingsley Coman or Leroy Sané. His interventions made it possible to quickly revive and extinguish some fires in the Mancunian defense.
This was a serious match for the former Borussia Dortmund defender.
2. Precious and decisive Rodri – A big Hit
Already the author of a rigorous first period in effort and placement, Rodri also broke the deadlock for his team. The Spanish international chained a hook on Leon Goretzka before arming a perfect curl in the right corner of Yann Sommer’s goal. It was his first Champions League goal in his career and he released it at the right time.
Rodri was often buffered by repeated assaults from Jamal Musiala without ever breaking.
3. Bernardo and Haaland rewarded – Hits
Bernardo Silva struggled to get into the game with several lacks in percussion. Then, the Portuguese international recovered by distributing a good ball between the lines for Rodri’s goal. He also made a hell of a festival on his side with two small bridges. Conclusion of his score, a fox goal from the head in the area.
Erling Haaland was the decisive passer for this great achievement from Silva. A center dropped for his teammate before scoring himself on a caviar from Julian Alvarez. The Cyborg was rewarded for his unwavering determination throughout the game, as was his left-handed friend.
The flops :
4. A Bavarian front without ideas
We will have seen the beginnings of an acceptable offensive front only during the first quarter of an hour of the second period. The Bavarian attack simply was ineffective. We saw a big chance for Jamal Musiala in the first period but he was countered by Ruben Dias. Sane , Coman and Gnabry all failed to shine.
The entry of Sadio Mané did not change anything.
Leon Goretzka and his nefarious inactivity didn’t help create anything in terms of attack. Transitions were poorly handled overall.
5. Alphonso Davies – A Flop
Alphonso Davies was in great difficulty on both sides to manage a very restless Bernardo Silva. The Canadian player was taken to the duel several times by his Portuguese rival. In front, he never brought anything for his attackers. A game well missed in both compartments of the game.
6. Upamecano – Another huge Flop
Dayot Upamecano was in great difficulty too. The French international was tasked with finding solutions in midfield and breaking lines. He succeeded several times before missing on one of them.
Upamecano gave Manchester City the second goal. On the third goal netted by Haaland , he completely dropped the mark and seemed to have lost the battle mentally. On his own, he killed his team and could have gifted more goals.
We remember several big disagreements between him and Yann Sommer.
The second leg takes place on April 19th and we wait to see if Bayern could stage a comeback to advance.
