Afena-Gyan Receives Huge Backing After Meteors Rejection : Felix Afena-Gyan has been in the news for some time now following his rejection of a Black Meteors invitation by Ghana U23 national men’s team head coach Ibrahim Tanko for the U23 Africa Cup of Nations qualification games against the Fennec Foxes of Algeria.
Whilst certain people have criticized the 20-year old , former Black Stars midfielder Derek Boateng has rather jumped to the defence of the striker who played under Jose Mourinho at AS Roma.
“Ghanaians have not been fair to that boy, so I support his decision to decline an invitation.” , Derek Boateng who played 47 games for the Black Stars between 2001 and 2003 said to Asempa FM.
“Football is no longer about going to the field and performing a lot of things that people don’t care about and only blame players for not performing.
Because football is all about the brain, you can never perform if you don’t have a good mindset. He was our best player in both of our games against Nigeria. Because we were playing one top, he was the player who was fighting four Nigerian defenders.
He tried everything, we qualified for the World Cup and they didn’t invite him, and now they want him for under 23 and his management says he isn’t ready,” , Boateng added.
The Ghana Olympic team nevertheless defeated Algeria by 2-1 on aggregate to qualify for the 2023 CAF U23 Africa Cup of Nations to be hosted in Morocco later this year.
According to Tanko the Meteors door is not eternally shut against Afena-Gyan saying he would invite him for the tournament finals in he is on good form.
