African Games: 9 more medals targeted by Team Ghana on final day of Athletics

As the exhilarating five-day spectacle of athleticism draws to a close at the University of Ghana Stadium for the 2023 African Games, Ghana Athletics stands on the brink of potentially seizing nine additional medals on the final day of competition.

Ghana has already showcased its prowess on the track and field, with standout performances securing three medals thus far. Rose Yeboah’s exceptional display in the Women’s High Jump not only secured gold but also solidified her status as a formidable force in the event.

Adding to the medal tally, Ghana’s relay teams exhibited impressive teamwork, clinching bronze in the Women’s 4x100m relay while the men settled for silver

However, the excitement is far from over as Ghanaian athletes gear up for a final push to claim more podium finishes.

Here are the events to watch out for on Friday, March 22, 2024 as Ghana aims to ascend the medal table of the African Games.

In the Men’s High Jump final, Ghana Athletics boasts two contenders, Ebenezer Gyimah and Evans Yamoah, presenting the opportunity for dual medal triumph at 4 pm.

John Ampomah takes aim at a medal in the Men’s Javelin throw.

In the 400m hurdles, Asana Hamidu progressed to the final and will be hoping to clinch a medal. She finished fourth in the heats as one of the fastest losers and booked a place presenting herself and team Ghana a great opportunity to increase its medal count.

Sprinter Janet Mensah after finishing second in the semifinals of the 200m, will fight for medal places in the final at 4:35 pm.
Joseph Paul Amoah and Ibrahim Fuseini headline Ghana’s challenge in the Men’s 200m finals after impressive performances in the semifinals.

Menawhile, apart from athletics, there are other disciplines like boxing and football among others where Ghana is sure to win medals.

With Ghana’s medal count in the 2023 African Games currently standing at 50, including 11 gold, 23 silver, and 16 bronze, the nation’s athletes are poised to further elevate their country’s standing on the continental stage.

The most recent medal was secured in Women’s football on Friday night as the Black Princesses triumphed over their Nigerian rivals to seize the gold medal.
