After Portugal’s elimination against France on Friday in the quarter-final of Euro 2024, losing 5-3 on penalties, Cristiano Ronaldo has expressed his disappointment on his social networks without deciding his intenational future.
The quarter-final encounter ended 0-0 after extra time as France converted all of their five spot kicks with Joao Felix hitting his penalty against the post.
Following Portugal’s elimination from the tournament, skipper Cristiano Ronaldo took to his Instagram and X (formerly Twitter) accounts to address his people. He thanked the Portuguese supporters but he did not hide his disappointment after this elimination.
“We wanted more. We deserved more. For us. For each of you. For Portugal. We are grateful for everything you have given us and for everything we have accomplished so far. On the on and off the pitch, I am sure that this legacy will be honored and will continue to be built together,” he said.
Alongside rock solid defender Pepe (41 years old), Cristiano Ronaldo (39 years old) represents the end of an era within the Seleção.
Asked about the future of his two players at a press conference this Friday, manager Roberto Martinez indicated that no decision has been made for the moment.
“No. Everything is too hard. We are still suffering from the defeat. There are no individual decisions at this stage,” he declared to the press, comments reported by the Daily Mail.
Cristiano Ronaldo, the all-time top scorer in Euro history (14 goals), did not score a single goal in this 2024 edition. Also, he became the competition’s best passer by delivering his seventh assist against Turkey on June 22.
Overall, the Al Nassr striker took 23 shots in 486 minutes across the 5 matches he played at Euro 2024, firing blank and producing a paltry 1 assist in those appearances.
