Ghana Football Continues to Collapse Across All Fronts : It is not funny anymore that the various national football teams continue to collapse and the shambolic Black Meteors display at the 2023 U23 Africa Cup of Nations is the latest.
The failure has become consistent and the nosedive of Ghana football is now across the two majors fronts ; club and national team football.
It is often said that failures can lead to success but it appears for most of our clubs and national teams in Africa and international soccer , one failure leads to another failure.
The last two winners of the Ghana Premier League have failed to reach the group stage of the CAF Champions League ; Hearts of Oak were humiliated by WAC of Morocco in the 2021/22 Champions League while Asante Kotoko failed in the preliminary round against RC Kadiogo of Burkina Faso.
In the Confederation Cup , Ashantigold and Hearts of Oak , went to just add up to the numbers in the 2021/22 and 2022/23 editions respectively.
In terms of the national team , the Black Stars were horrible in the last Africa Cup of Nations played in Cameroon in 2022 ; defeated by Morocco , drew against Gabon and beaten by Comoros.
The qualification to the 2022 FIFA World Cup was definitely a positive turn of events but the Black Stars failed to come out of the group stages in Qatar.
Look at the performance of the Black Galaxies at the 2023 CHAN tournament in Algeria. Awful.
The team of Annor Walker were defeated by Madagascar before the Ghana CHAN team managed to win against Sudan but that was still not enough to advance the Ghanaian team from the group stage.
Of course , when Ghanaian clubs fail in Africa , I am not trying to put all the blame at the doorsteps of the GFA but they are definitely a significant part because they are organize the Ghana Premier League and the FA Cup competitions.
Currently the Ghana Football Association is ranked joint 27th alongside Mauritania and Benin on the CAF 5-Year ranking for the 2023/24 CAF inter club competitions. These three countries are the worst national soccer federations on the current rankings. Yes you read that correct ; the Ghana FA is part of the bottom three federations.
It is worrying that under the current Ghana Football Association , there has not been a single extraordinary sporting achievement of our clubs and national teams in terms of Africa and international competitions and I put emphasis on the word extraordinary.
Qualifying to tournaments like the AFCON , the CHAN , the U23 AFCON , U17 AFCON , the Women’s AFCON , the FIFA World Cup , the CAF Champions League , the Confederation Cup and co are ordinary advancements but our clubs and national teams should go above that.
It is normal for any country to go through a period of nosedive but when the collapse is across all fronts , like we are currently seeing in Ghana football , it becomes scary.
