U23 AFCON Qualification Rules Explained : The Black Meteors of Ghana recorded an important away draw in their 2023 CAF U23 Africa Cup of Nations final round qualification match against the Fennec Foxes of Algeria on Friday night.
Sporting CP midfielder Abdul Fatawu Issahaku reminded everyone of his natural soccer talent with an incredible long-range effort against Algeria goalkeeper Teddy Boulhendi to put Ghana ahead in the 83rd minute.
The home team equalized with a penalty at stoppage time as the first leg ended 1-1.
The second leg takes place in Kumasi on March 28th and the aggregate winner qualifies to the 2023 CAF U23 Africa Cup of Nations finals tournament to be staged in Morocco from 24th June to 4th July , 2022.
But what are the rules of the qualification?
Indeed the away goal rule is still in place for this competition meaning the Black Meteors have taken a significant first leg advantage with Fatawu’s strike in Annaba but the job is not done yet.
Any type of victory in 90 minutes qualifies head coach Ibrahim Tanko and his players to the Morocco tournament.
However , a 1-1 draw in Kumasi will see the tie decided by penalty shoot-outs whilst results such as 2-2 , 3-3 or 4-4 will qualify Algeria at the expense of the Meteors.
