Black Meteors Defeat Congo by 3-2 on Sunday : he Black Meteors of Ghana imposed a 3-2 defeat against Congo U23 national men’s team during the opening match of Group A of the 2023 CAF U23 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
The Ghana U23 team failed to shine in the first half but completely dominated their opponents in the second half as Ibrahim Tanko replaced Sylvester Simba and captain Daniel Afriyie Barnieh with Hafiz Ibrahim and Emmanuel Yeboah.
Ghana scored thrice before shockingly dropping the level to concede twice in two minutes during additional time of seven minutes as Congo threatened a comeback at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat on Sunday.
Nordsjaelland winger Ernest Nuamah Appiah who was called to the Black Stars for the first time by Ghana head coach Chris Hughton for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Madagascar put Ghana ahead in the 50th minute thanks to the service of substitute Emmanuel Yeboah.
Yeboah of CFR Cluj had replaced skipper of the team Daniel Afriyie Barnieh at the beginning of the second period as the former Hearts of Oak attacker struggled to have a good game.
The 19-year old Numah scored 15 goals and made 4 assists for his Danish team in 34 matches across all competitions during the 2022/23 season.
Yeboah himself scored to make it 2-0 in the 76th minute.
Ghana were awarded a penalty in the 79th minute as Arko-Mensah was brought down in the box.
Abdul Fatawu Issahaku stepped forward to take it and his effort was saved by Congo goalkeeper Dhody Foutou but a replay was ordered by the referees as the keeper moved off his line before the spot kick was taken.
Nuamah Appiah decided to take the second attempt but he also failed to beat Foutou and once again the Congolese goalkeeper was adjudged to have moved off his line before the kick was taken.
A second retake was thus ordered and this time Emmanuel Yeboah made no mistakes from the spot to make it 3-0 for the Ghana U23 team for his second goal of the game.
After the 90 minutes were up , the referee added seven minutes and Congo went ahead to score two goals in two minutes as they threatened to stage a great comeback but in the end Ghana held on to win the match by 3-2.
Reich Kokolo and Yann Ngatse scored a goal each in the 92nd and 94th minutes to make it 3-2.
Meanwhile host team Morocco defeated Guinea by 2-1 in the other opening match of Group A as Barcelona boy Abdessamad Ezzalzouli netted twice for the Moroccans.
Ghana lead Group A after the opening day of the competition. The Black Meteors have three points , Morocco also have three points at the second place whilst Congo and Guinea follow.
