Head coach of the Ghana U23 national men’s team Ibrahim Tanko has reacted to his team’s elimination from the 2023 CAF U23 Africa Cup of Nations following a draw against Guinea on Friday.
Emmanuel Yeboah netted in the 33rd minute to put Ghana ahead as the CFR Cluj attacker registered his third strike of the competition but that was still not enough to keep Ibrahim Tanko’s team in the competition.
Ghana needed to win in order to stay in the tournament but Guinea proved the better side for majority of the second half as they created numerous scoring chances. They were finally rewarded in the 61st minute as Ibrahima Breze equalized with a wonderful volley following a corner kick.
The Hammarby TFF midfielder was at a perfect place to volley home the leveler after a corner kick was cleared by the Ghanaian defence but Breze made it count from the second ball.
“We disappointed Ghanaians and ourselves. We thought we will go far in this competition but this is what happened”.
“It’s a very painful pill to take. After leading at halftime and come back to concede such a goal is so bitter”
“But that is football. We prepared to win but in the end we got a draw which wasnt enough to take us into the semi-finals”, Coach Tanko stated.
The Head Coach further stated that the technical team will evaluate the team’s performance at the tournament.
“We have to analyze the games we played and there’s a lot we could do better”, he added.
