Mohammed Polo Speaks On The Fearsome Five of Hearts of Oak : Iconic former Ghana star Mohammed Polo has spoken about the “Fearsome Five” of Hearts of Oak following the death of a member of the quintet , Anas Seidu , largely respected in Ghana and Africa.
“The Fearsome Five was a group of five extremely talented footballers in the Hearts of Oak team. All the five players played for the national team. So the Fearsome Five in the Hearts of Oak was a team very very interesting to watch and play.
Anas passed away on 1st July 2023 in his home in Accra as reactions continue to come from the football world.
“Yes football is not played by only five players. It was a team and so the team in totality was a very good side with good players from goalkeeper to the number eleven. And even the reserve players who come on to replace are also very good.”
“At that time with the Fearsome Five , for those who watch us play , people who did not attend our games will ask how many did we score. They will not ask who won the match because of how good we were , opponents hardly stood a chance against us.” , Polo stated on Kumasi-base Fox FM.
The “Fearsome Five” were made of Mohammed Polo , Robert Hammond , Peter Lamptey , Mama Acquah and Anas Seidu “Thunderman” who passed away couple of days ago and together they excited Ghanaian soccer fans in the 70s.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino sent a message of condolence to the Ghana Football Association (GFA )on Thursday to commiserate with the GFA and the family of the late Ghana international as the FIFA makes a special reference to the “Fearsome Five”.
’I would like herewith to express my sincerest and heartfelt condolences on the passing of former international player, Anas Seidu ‘Thunder’.
Words seem inadequate to express the sadness we feel for this loss. During his career, Anas Seidu was regularly capped by the national team and notably won the 1978 CAF Africa Cup of Nations. At club level, he will be remembered for his long and successful career with Accra Hearts of Oak SC, where he was part of the “Fearsome Five”, winning numerous titles in the 1970s.
Legend of Ghanaian football, regarded as one of the best forwards of his generation, his legacy and trajectory on and off the pitch will not be forgotten and he will be truly missed. On behalf of the international football community” , the FIFA President said in the statement.
Mohammed Polo commented on the message from the FIFA boss :
“I think we should be very proud as Ghanaians that the FIFA President himself has sent a message of sympathy to the GFA after the death of Anas. He was such a great player and so I am not surprised that the FIFA President made reference to the Fearsome Five that Anas was part. No one hit the ball better than he did. We have to appreciate what these players have done. May God have mercy on those who have departed us” , Polo told Kumasi-based Fox FM on Thursday.
Meanwhile the death of Anas Seidu means only two members of the historic Fearsome Five are alive now ; Polo and Peter Lamptey.
