Gambia U-23 defeated Burkina Faso 1-0 in Cotonou on Wednesday.
Momodou Bojang scored from the penalty spot in the second half after Lamin Jarjou was brought down.
The return leg is slated for September 27th in Marrakech, Morocco, with the winner advancing to the next stage to face Senegal.
The 2023 CAF TotalEnergies AFCON will be hosted by Morocco in June next year.
