Former Blackburn Rovers striker Chris Sutton has lauded Spain’s beautiful football at UEFA Euro 2024 resulting in a record 4th Euro title for the Spanish national team.
‘It is a good thing for football that Spain won the tournament with the brand they have played. Spain played the beautiful game and England didn’t.
Spain are a team. England are bits and pieces.’, Sutton said to BBC One.
The former Celtic forward won the 1994/95 Premier League title with Blackburn, scoring 15 league goals in 40 matches.
Sutton’s form for Blackburn won him an England cap on 15 November 1997, when he came on in the 79th minute against Cameroon, although he was left out of the World Cup squad after a fall-out with national manager Glenn Hoddle.
Having been relegated to the England B team Sutton refused to play, and Hoddle never selected Sutton for an England squad again.
The Euro 2024 Final
England conceded the first goal of a game for the fourth successive time at Euro 2024, all happening in the knockout, when Nicolas Williams slotted home the opening goal of Sunday’s final thanks to Lamine Yamal’s assist in the 47th minute.
Gareth Southgate made changes to his starting team by introducing Ollie Watkins and Cole Palmer for Harry Kane and Kobbie Mainoo respectively as the Three Lions pushed for an equalizer.
England improved and got the equalizer in the 73rd when Chelsea’s Palmer scored with a brilliant grounded effort.
However, as it happened to Germany in the quarter-finals, the English team’s hearts were broken after substitute Mikel Oyarzabal slid to connect home the winning goal for Spain four minutes from time.
