Will Kotoko Miss Albert Amoah?: Asante Kotoko striker Albert Amoah is expected to be sidelined for many weeks after sustaining an anterior talofibular ligament injury in his right leg, the club announced on Tuesday.
The attacker picked up the injury in Kotoko’s 1-1 away stalemate at Medeama during Matchweek 16 of the Ghana Premier League, limping out in the 36th minute to be replaced by Saaka Dauda.
”Albert Amoah is expected to be out of action for about two months with a partial tear of the anterior talofibular ligament in his right leg.”
”The forward sustained an ankle injury during the 1-1 draw away at Medeama last week and subsequently missed the club’s FA Cup round-32 win last Sunday.”
Reacting to unpleasant news, Kotoko head coach Prosper Ogum said:
”It’s unpleasant news losing him and Kotei at this busy stage of the season. I initially had chills when it happened during the game because Albert is naturally a strong boy, but the shout he made during the impact, left me worried, but injuries are part of the game, and we can just hope he recovers quickly, as he has shown with his previous injury.”
The Porcupine Warriors, who sit sixth in the league, will be without their top scorer of season for the next couple of months. Albert is set to miss at least four league fixtures against Vision FC (19th Jan.), Karela United (24th Jan.), Nsoatreman FC (2nd Feb.), and Young Apostles (9th Feb.).
Amoah has been Kotoko’s most likely source of goals this season, netting 9 goals in 14 games across all competitions with 7 strikes happening in the GPL.
Now that the former Great Olympics man is going to unavailable for the upcoming games, it is interesting to see how Prosper Ogum would adapt.
Amoah has missed four games already in 2024/25 and Kotoko won three of them scoring in each match for a total of six goals. The only game Albert Amoah missed and Kotoko did not win was the 1-0 away loss at Bechem United on Nov. 11.
While the forward has provided majority of Kotoko goals this season, the Reds have looked elsewhere for goals during a period where Amoah was away with the Black Galaxies and missed a couple of club games.
Returning striker Kwame Poku has found the back of the net in each of the 3 matches he has featured, establishing himself as the main goal getter of the side.
Kotoko have also added more attacking personnel in the name of Sampson Eduku and it appears a smart move with Amoah now ruled out for several weeks.
While the stats reveal Kotoko do not struggle to win matches without Amoah, his 9 strikes in 14 appearances means the Warriors will miss his overall reliability, but Kwame Poku has demonstrated he can be another man to count on.
