Bayern Munich and Germany midfielder Leon Goretzka believes European nations are heading into the 2026 FIFA World Cup with renewed belief and momentum.
Speaking ahead of the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico, he suggested Europe still sets the benchmark when it matters most.
Trump comments spark unity among Europeans
Goretzka said the political climate in the US, particularly under President Donald Trump, has had an unexpected effect on players.
As stated by Al Jazeera, according to him, it has strengthened a shared European identity, making players feel united not just as Germans, but as Europeans. In an interview with Die Zeit, the Bayern midfielder argued that while teams from other continents have closed the gap, Europe remains ahead on the biggest stage. He insisted the World Cup will once again underline Europe’s quality and competitiveness.
As the countdown to the June 11–July 19 competition continues, discussions around a possible boycott have intensified. St Pauli president Oke Göttlich, also a vice president of the German FA, recently said the issue deserves serious consideration and open debate.
Blatter supports critics questioning tournament decision
Former FIFA president Sepp Blatter added his voice to the discussion, backing Swiss lawyer and anti-corruption expert Mark Pieth, who has urged fans to boycott the tournament. Blatter said Pieth was right to question the hosting of the World Cup.
Despite the political noise, Goretzka expects a successful and entertaining tournament that will help grow football in North America.
According to FIFA, Germany have been drawn in Group E, where they will face Ivory Coast, Curaçao and Ecuador.
