Chris Hughton Sends Clear Message to Black Stars Players : Ghana captain Andre Ayew was not involved in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualification match against Angola on Thursday as Chris Hughton begins his era as Ghana head coach with clear message.
Antoine Semenyo came off the bench to score a 94th minute winner for Ghana who now are in control of the AFCON qualification Group E with 7 points in 3 matches played.
The 33-year old was spotted on the Ghana bench and even warmed up during the match at the Babayara sports stadium even though his name was not included on the official team poster posted by the Ghana Football Association.
“As a head coach, you have to make difficult decisions. You know the quality that Andre possesses, but you also know the quality of the rest of the squad,” Hughton said after the match.
“Ultimately, it was my choice not to play him, but that doesn’t reflect on his abilities as a player. He remains a valuable member of the team.” , the Black Stars head coach added.
This is a clear message to the rest of the players that no one is guaranteed a starting place in the Black Stars during the era of the former technical advisor to Otto Addo.
Hughton has been handed a short contract that ends in December 2024 and he is wasting no time in letting his players understand what type of manager he is.
