Morocco Becomes First Team to Qualify for AFCON 2023 : The Atlas Lions of Morocco have officially qualified for the final phase of the CAF African Cup of Nations , Côte d’Ivoire 2023.
After the 2-2 draw between South Africa and Liberia on Friday during the 3rd day of the AFCON qualifiers, Morocco join hosts Ivory Coast as the only qualified teams so far.
In the qualification Group K , there are only three teams due to the disqualification of Zimbabwe.
Morocco on six points in two matches are assured to finish at least second in the group and therefore they qualify to the competition to be staged in the West African nation in 2024.
Liberia and South Africa have a point each in two games played and the remaining qualification spot of Group K is now up for grabs amongst the two.
The Atlas Lions , who made history at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar becoming the first African national team to reach the semi-finals of the world’s biggest soccer competition , defeated South Africa by 2-1 in Rabat on 9th June 2022 during the opening day of the qualifiers.
Morocco recorded their second victory against Liberia (2-0) in a home game of the Liberians played in Casablanca on 13th June , 2022.
What next?
The Moroccan team will travel to South Africa on June 12 and will face Liberia at home on September 4th.
