The 2022/23 betPawa GPL : The 2022/23 betPawa Ghana Premier League season commenced on Saturday with Great Olympics defeating Bechem United at the Accra Sports stadium.
This season marks the third football season in a row since Kurt Okraku became Ghana Football Association (GFA) president back in October 2019.
Covid-19 denies Kurt a first full season :
The 2019/20 season was supposed to be the first full season of the Kurt era but that season , just like several other sporting competitions and events across the globe , had to be terminated due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Majority of the first round of that season was completed but the natural disaster struck to halt both national and international trade.
However following the reduction of the negative impact of Covid-19, football resumed in almost every country in the world and we saw the start and completion of the 2020/21 campaign – handing the Kurt Okraku -led GFA administration it’s first full football season.
Hearts of Oak won their first Ghana Premier League title for the first time under the majority ownership of Togbe Afede XIV to represent the country in the CAF Champions League. The Phobians also won the MTN FA Cup to complete the double.
The 2021/22 season represented the second full season of the Kurt Okraku era as head of the Ghana Football Association with Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak winning the league and FA Cup respectively.
The two giants are in Africa this season. The Porcupine Warriors contest the CAF Champions League whilst Hearts of Oak enter the CAF Confederation Cup.
