Ebenezer Owusu “Asasewura” : The untold story of avid Kotoko fan who travelled to all 35 Kotoko games last season

Avid Asante Kotoko fan Ebenezer Owusu popularly known as Asasewura travelled and watched all 35 matches of the club last season.

For more than a decade the passionate football fan has been travelling to matches – both home and away – of Asante Kotoko and he is never stopping.

What he started in the 2007/08 season has become a ritual and the upcoming season will be the 16th consecutive season that Ebenezer Owusu has been travelling to Kotoko matches.

Asasewura incredibly travelled to all 34 league matches of the Porcupine Warriors as they won the 2021/22 Ghana Premier League title. He also attended the FA Cup match where Kotoko were defeated and eliminated by King Faisal in December 2021.

The ardent fan – with the Kotoko supporter registration number AK0000116 – is one of the most famous supporters of the club and his unflinching support for the champions of Ghana is well documented.

Ahead of the 2022/23 betPawa Ghana Premier League season, the extraordinary Kotoko supporter gave audience to GhanaSportsMarket.Com in a wide -ranging interview.

“I have been been travelling to Kotoko games for the past fifteen years. I don’t watch on TV. I travelled to wherever the team plays and watch the games in person.” Ebenezer Owusu told GhanaSportsMarket.com.

“Last year I travelled and watched all 34 matches of Kotoko in the league and I also attended the FA Cup game against King Faisal.” he revealed.

Hitting the road for every single game definitely requires a lot of commitment and wherewithal. Yet Asasewura has been doing that for more than a decade from his own purse.

“I love the club and I am always happy when I travel to watch Kotoko matches. I am not sponsored by anyone. I foot the bills myself and even sometimes I sponsor other supporters of the club to come along with me” he revealed.

The extraordinary dedication of Asasewura has not gone unrecognized. In December 2020 he was voted as the maiden winner of the Kotoko Star Fan of the Month award by partners of the club Starlife Assurance. He received a package worth 5000 Ghana Cedis.

The Risk of road accidents does not discourage Ebenezer

It is undeniable fact that significant number of the roads in Ghana are poor and therefore the risk of car accidents is a headache for frequent travellers but this has never stopped the passion of Ebenezer for his dear club Asante Kotoko.

On 19th April 2018 , he was involved in a car accident as he travelled from Accra to Kumasi to watch the league match between Kotoko and Berekum Chelsea , a game that eventually ended 1-1 ( I personally bear witness to this accident record).

Two more accidents have followed on 3rd November 2018 and 30th April 2022 when he was traveling to watch a pre-season game against Akyemansa in Akyem Ofoase and a league encounter against West Africa Football Academy in Sogakope respectively.

“I have suffered three separate accidents over the years of travelling to games but thanks to God I survived all these accidents but I have thought about stopping” the avid fan recounted.

“I have never been discouraged by the amount of money I spend for my several travels or the fear of road accidents. For me wherever Kotoko play , I have to be there in person to watch and this season God willing the tradition will continue” he added.

The practice of season ticket holders is not common in Ghana football but for fifteen years running Ebenezer Owusu has proven himself to be a season ticket holder for Asante Kotoko in his own right.
