“Go to school. You need better academic knowledge if you want to play a key role in Ghana football” – GFA Executive Council member tells Stephen Appiah

Oduro Sarfo Urges Stephen Appiah to Seek More Education : Executive Council member of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) , Oduro Sarfo , has urged former Ghana captain Stephen Appiah to seek more academic education if he wants to play important role in the administration of football in the country.

The former Black Stars of Ghana captain recently stated on Sunyani-based Sompa FM that he is waiting to see the day a former legend of the game will lead the GFA and his statement has generated intense public discussion.

“Samuel Eto’o is the FA President for Cameroon. He needed to go to school so he can better himself academically. He joined associations that are affiliated with their FA before making plans to contest.” , Oduro Sarfo is quoted to have told Onua FM.

“If Stephen Appiah wants to play a key role or he wants to lead the GFA he needs to have better academic knowledge and certificates.” , Mr. Sarfo added.

Appiah played notably played for Hearts of Oak in Ghana before taking his professional career abroad where he played for clubs like Udinese , Parma , Juventus and Fenerbahce.

The talented former midfielder saw his reputation enhanced as captain of the Black Stars team that qualified the country to play at he first ever FIFA World Cup in Germany 2006.

“It is sad that the legends don’t get the opportunity to lead our football. The kind of people we can pick phone and call , you will be shocked” , Stephen Appiah said.

“Football nowadays is run by footballers. It is not only about grammar.

I am hoping one of the legends of Ghana will lead Ghana football one day and he will be massively supported by the others” , Appiah added.

Elsewhere in Cameroon , former Indomitable Lion Samuel Eto’o is the Cameroon Football Federation President and the likes of Kalusha Bwalya and Hani Abdo Reda are ex footballers who led the soccer federations of their respective countries.

In Ivory Coast Didier Drogba unsuccessfully run for the Presidential elections of the Ivory Coast Football Federation and as for George Weah he went more steps ahead to become the President of his country Liberia.

That is what the former Juventus player wants to see in Ghana where Kurt Okraku’s first four year mandate expires in October 2023.

Big names such as Abedi Ayew Pele , Anthony Yeboah , Sammy Kuffour , Karim Abdul Razak , Ibrahim Sunday , Michael Essien , Asamoah Gyan , Sulley Muntari have not been involved with football administration in terms of the GFA since they hanged their boots and Appiah wants to see a change.
