“pele” Officially Registered in Portuguese Dictionary : It is another big victory for the Pelé Foundation with the entry of the word “pele” in the Portuguese dictionary. The name “Pele” is the nickname of the former global soccer legend Edson Arantes do Nascimento who passed away in 2022.
Registered as a common name, without capital letters, the term bears the following definition:
“Something or someone out of the ordinary, something or someone whose quality, value or superiority cannot be assimilated to nothing or anyone else, like Pelé®, nickname of Edson Arantes do Nascimento (1940-2022), considered the greatest sportsman of all time; exceptional, incomparable, unique”.
It has also become synonymous with excellence.
The request had been submitted in mid-April on the Twitter account of the former striker who died in December 2022.
It had been supported by the Santos club for which Pelé played more than 650 times as well as by the Sportv media owned by Globo, very powerful media group in Brazil.
In 2021, Pelé was diagnosed with colon cancer. He underwent surgery the same month, and afterwards was treated with several rounds of chemotherapy.
In early 2022, metastasis were detected in the intestine, lung and liver. On November 29, he was admitted to the Albert Einstein Israelite Hospital in São Paulo due to a respiratory infection after he contracted COVID-19 and for reassessment of the treatment of his colon cancer.
On December 3, 2022, it was reported that Pelé had become unresponsive to chemotherapy and that it was replaced with palliative care.
On 21 December 2022, the Albert Einstein Israelite Hospital, where Pelé was being treated, stated that his tumour had advanced and he required “greater care related to renal and cardiac dysfunctions”.
Therefore, he was not allowed to spend Christmas at home, as his family had wanted. Pelé died on 29 December 2022, at 3:27 pm, at the age of 82, due to multiple organ failure, a complication of colon cancer.
Pelé’s death certificate stated that he had died of kidney failure, heart failure, bronchopneumonia and colon adenocarcinoma. He was survived by his 100-year-old mother, Celeste, who, given her advanced age, was not aware of her son’s death.
